Description

I'm selling 1- 8"x10" photograph of Project Mercury Astronaut, Virgil Ivan Grissom.
Project Mercury was the first human spaceflight program of the United States, running from 1958 through 1963. An early highlight of the Space Race, its goal was to put a man into Earth orbit and return him safely, ideally before the Soviet Union.
This is an official NASA photo which has his name and Bio written on the back. This was with my father's collections of things he kept during his 31 years with NBC Television in Washington, D. C..
I believe this was used to shoot on camera for a news broadcast, because someone numbered the photo's order to be used, along with the Astronauts name on the bottom white border. (shown in the 2nd to last photo) I believe it was done by the floor manager, so he had a fast reference when the Director called for it. This can easily be cropped out if necessary.
PLEASE ALSO NOTE: The bottom right corner had been slightly torn and then taped on the back to repair it, as pictured in the last photo I took. The Bio on the back has faded a bit due to age, but is still legible.   Good Luck
A QUICK NOTE ABOUT MY DAD:
My father worked at NBC (WRC in Washington, D.C.) from 1947-1978. He started out as a Cameraman and in a few short years was promoted to Technical Director. He was one of the true television pioneers of his time. He was in charge of assigning the entire engineering crew and then switching the show in the control room. He was also an excellent photographer and won many awards for his photographs at the Washington Camera Club. He would always bring his Nikon and Hasselblad camera's to work with him to take behind the scenes pictures of shows, interviews, and breaking news events. He passed away in 2004 and I have now decided to sell some of his collections. Keep watch for my future auctions where I have many rare collectibles, along with his original  behind the scenes photos that have never been seen by the public.
