The Dugan glass company was based in Indiana, Pennsylvania and was founded by Thomas Dugan, a cousin of Harry Northwood.
About 1904 Dugan along with his partner W. G. Minnemayer bought the closed Northwood
factory in Indiana, PA and opened it as the Dugan glass company.
The company continued production after the Dugans left the company and was renamed the Diamond glass company in 1913.
The company continued production until a fire destroyed the plant on June 27, 1931.
Dugan is best known for peach opalescent, a type of Carnival Glass.
They produced the most peach opalescent of any of the carnival glass manufacturers.
    U
    ranium glass
    / Vaseline Glass is glass
    which has had uranium,
    usually in oxide diuranate
form, added to a glass mix before melting for colouration. The proportion usually varies from trace levels to about two percent uranium by weight, although some 20th-century pieces were made with up to 25 percent uranium.
Having been first identified in 1789 by a German chemist, uranium was soon being added to decorative glass for its fluorescent effect. James Powell’s Whitefriars glass company in London, England was one of the first to market the glowing glass, but other manufacturers were also quick to realise its sales potential and Uranium glass was produced across Europe
    and later North America.
The normal colour of uranium glass ranges from yellow to green depending on the oxidation state
and concentration of the metal ions, although this may be altered by the addition of other elements as
    glass
    color glass colorants.
    Uranium glass also fluoresces
    bright green under ultraviolet light
and can register above background radiation on a sufficiently sensitive Geiger counter,
although most pieces of uranium glass are considered to be harmless and only negligibly radioactive.
Glass swans have been an enormously popular item for many, many years, and they are very collectable. Naturally, Carnival Glass makers did not want to miss out on a lucrative market, and open swans, or swan salts, were made in Classic Carnival Glass by Dugan, Dugan-Diamond and Fenton, and in contemporary Carnival Glass by Fenton and Imperial.
Dugan is considered to have been the first to make Classic (old) Carnival Glass Swans, and Classic production continued with Dugan-Diamond and Fenton. Lance tells us that he believes these were the only makers of old swans in Carnival Glass.
“The old Fenton swans are easy to distinguish by the definitive lines in the wings. The Dugan wings are more stylized and the wings have a more random look to them.”
The misuse of opalescent (for iridescent) was not unusual and indeed it still persists today. It referred to a Carnival Glass Swan (sometimes called Pastel Swan or Swan Salt) which was made in a variety of colors in Classic Carnival by both Fenton and Dugan-Diamond - an ice green.

There’s no doubt that there are other minor mould variations.
