PLANETARY ATMOSPHERE EXPERIMENTS TEST VEHICHLE- VINTAGE REPORT 1972-1973 NASA:TITLED: "PAET, AN ENTRY PROBE EXPERIMENT IN EARTH'S ATMOSPHERE"
This report was obtained from the estate of a former NASA scientist. It is a illustrated revised report from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Ames Research Center, Moffett Field California, circa 1973. Authors of the report are: Alvin Seiff, David E. Reese, Simon C. Sommer, Donn B. Kirk, Ellis E. Whiting, and Hasso B. Niemann.
This revised report concerns a probe vehicle entering the earth's atmosphere off of Bermuda on June 20th 1971, at a velocity of 6.6 km per second, carrying experiments designed to determine the composition and structural characteristics of Earth's atmosphere. This probe, called the Planetary Atmosphere Experiments Test Vehicle (PAET), was a blunted cone, about 1 meter in diameter. It weighted 62 kg. of which 14Kg was instruments. Starting with deacceleration, it made measurements to define the thermal structure of the atmosphere, from an altitude of 90 km to impact in the sea. On board mass spectrometer and enhanced radiometer which measured composition of the atmosphere. Further, it explored the the duration and directional dependence of communication during black out re-entry periods and performance of the heat shield. The ultimate goal was to use the information gathered for testing the atmosphere on other planets.
Fine condition, 39 pages with text, data, charts, and photographs of the equipment. I have imaged only a few of the pages from the report.
This report is highly technical & seldom found outside the scientific community. Great vintage NASA related research.
